A marketing team of four at a €50M revenue brand is producing content that competes directly with a team of forty at a €500M competitor. It shouldn't be possible. But it is, because the mid-size team made different structural choices about how content gets produced.
The enterprise content machine isn't as efficient as it looks
Enterprise content operations are expensive, but they're not necessarily faster or better. Large teams have coordination overhead: more approvals, more stakeholders, more rounds of revision. A piece of content that takes a three-person mid-size team four days to produce can take an enterprise team three weeks to navigate through internal review.
The real advantage enterprise brands have is coverage, they can produce content across more channels, more languages, and more formats simultaneously. Mid-size brands can't match that with headcount. But they can match it with a production system that multiplies the output of a small team.
Where mid-size brands actually win
Mid-size brands have structural advantages that enterprise teams don't:
- Faster decisions: One brand manager can approve a new content direction in a day. At an enterprise brand, the same decision goes through a brand council, legal, and a regional marketing director
- Tighter brand focus: Mid-size brands usually have one product, one audience, and one voice. Enterprise brands often have ten product lines and five audience segments, consistency is genuinely harder
- Closer customer relationships: Smaller brands can write content that sounds like it comes from a real person who knows the customer. Enterprise content often sounds like it was approved by a committee, because it was
- Fewer legacy constraints: Enterprise brands carry years of approved templates, legal review processes, and regional variations. Mid-size brands can move quickly because there's less institutional weight
The production gap is real, here's how to close it
The area where enterprise brands genuinely outperform mid-size competitors is production volume. More content, more channels, more formats. A mid-size team of four cannot produce the same volume as a team of twenty, even with better processes.
The teams that close this gap do it by changing the unit of production. Instead of producing individual pieces, one article, one social post, one ad, they produce content systems. A single well-designed brief produces the blog post, four social variants, the email subject line, and the ad copy at once. That's a 5× or 6× multiplier on the same brief investment.
Coolblue, which competes in Dutch e-commerce against much larger international players, has built its content operations around this principle. Their product content team produces category-level briefs that generate variations across channels, rather than briefing each channel separately.
The tools that level the playing field
Three years ago, enterprise brands had access to content production tools that mid-size brands couldn't afford. That's no longer true. AI-powered content platforms that were enterprise-only pricing in 2022 are now accessible to teams of any size. The advantage has shifted from access to implementation.
The mid-size brands winning this are the ones that have done two things: invested in setting up brand rules in their production tools properly (not just prompting better), and structured their content calendar around modular production rather than one-off requests. Setup takes time. But the compounding effect over six months is significant, teams report producing 8–12× more content from the same headcount after building proper production workflows.
Pick one channel where the volume gap is most painful and build a proper production workflow for just that channel first. Get the brand rules set, the templates designed, the review process defined. Then expand. Trying to change everything at once is how enterprise projects fail, mid-size teams can move channel by channel and see results faster.
